Styx Albums Ranked (IMO)

Styx Albums Ranked (IMO)

I've blogged about these guys before. Recently I've seen some articles ranking their albums from "worst" to "best". As a long-time, die-hard Styx fan, I don't believe there is a "worst" or "best" album, but I do have favorites.

So, here is another ranking of the albums of a band that has been around for more than 50 years - in the opinion of a fan that has been with them for the duration.

17. 'Kilroy Was Here' (1983)
There were two songs on this record written by Tommy Shaw that have some redeeming qualities - Cold War and This Could Be the Longest Night. The rest of the album: meh.

16. 'Styx' (1972)
As far as freshman records go from the early 1970s this one isn't bad. It just doesn't hold up.

15. (Tie) 'The Mission' (2017) and 'Crash of the Crown" (2021)
The two most recent records, while they have some interesting hooks and songs were far too reliant on Will Evankovich - both as a songwriter and producer. Should have been released as the Will Evankovich Band with special guests Tommy Shaw and Todd Sucherman.

13. 'The Serpent Is Rising' (1973)
Two words: Plexiglass Toilet

12. 'Big Bang Theory' (2005)
This is one of the better cover albums ever done by any band or collection of bands. Needs to be right in the middle of the pack.

11. 'Brave New World' (1999)
While different from the 70s and early 80s albums, this record really felt like the band was heading into the 21st century on a roll. Too bad they couldn't get along and figure it out.

10. 'Styx II' (1973)
Production quality is outstanding. This album must be in the top 10 if only because of Lady. You Need Love, A Day, Father O.S.A., and Earl of Roseland are highlights.

9. 'Edge of the Century' (1990)
In the midst of grunge, this record stood out. Even though not a strong sales performance, the individual and collaborative songwriting was stellar.

8. 'Paradise Theatre' (1981)
Debated whether to rank this lower but this is a strong album. This record demonstrated the impending split of the band 2 years later. There are some really strong songs that got little airplay: She Cares and Lonely People.

7. 'Cyclorama' (2003)
Some very innovative songwriting and performances, including Burgeois Pig featuring Billy Bob Thornton. This one deserves to be in the top 10.

6. 'Man of Miracles' (1974)
Without Man of Miracles, Equinox would never have come about. Without Equinox, there would be no The Grand Illusion.

5. 'Cornerstone' (1979)
Babe was a #1 hit, yes. Drop First Time and this album is fabulous.

4. 'Crystal Ball' (1976)
Following in the wake of Equinox, this showcased the "new" band's emerging talents as songwriters and performers.

3. 'Pieces of Eight' (1978)
The title track, The Message into Lords of the Ring, are great bits of prog.

2. 'Equinox' (1975)
This one is strong front to back. From Light Up to Suite: Madame Blue - this is an amazing record.

1. 'The Grand Illusion' (1977)
Fame and fortune came from this one. Castle Walls is the song that needs more credit and love.
